Barn Owl update.

Day 3 observing the Owl near the hide, and i notice 2 days she does the same thing. She tends to hunt from 1400 to 15.30 sometimes returning to her roosting box. I have observed a very interesting fact, that i read for years that the Barn Owl will not hunt in the rain and wind due to hearing and the feathers get waterlogged quickly. Well on Tuesday 19th March i was waiting in my hide when she came and sat on the same post for 5 mins, then the rain came. I expected her to go back to take shelter but to my astonishment she just sat there. It then spotted something in the grass and swooped down on it and stayed and finished eating it before returning to the post.

Another 10 mins went by and it was soaking wet but it still didn’t return to its nest. My only thought is that it shouldn’t be hunting in daylight as this is a sign that she is hungry. But she is making kills and the weather at night has been good for her so it doesn’t make any sense. The other thing is that where she hunts there are a lot of Tawny Owls who only hunt at night. They could be to many for the area to support 2 or 3 Owls. What ever happens its lovely to see this Majestic birds flying silently past and being free. Hope you enjoy a few more i got on the 19th March 2019
