There are still no Barn Owl’s in the site area and close proximity, so its time to make a few boxes for the Barn Owl to use. I have sighted 2 Kestrel boxes and 4 Tawny Owl boxes on site. The Barn Owl box is a bit more difficult to site. The Tree needs to have a big trunk and needs to be in a specific location. There has to be no low hanging branches up to 3 metres and the box needs to be visible to the Barn Owl on a flypast. With this in mind it makes the job of sighting the box a bit tricky. I have a couple of trees in mind but it all depends if the box with fit onto the tree. The Barn Owl will have young now so there is no hurry to put the box up and sighting is done in late October early November, but i believe that if you site early there is a chance that the young that fledge around August will find the box and remember where it is.
When we close for the season i will place a Trail Camera at the nest box to record footage of any activity.
